This £3.5 million award winning swing bridge across the Deptford Creek at Greenwich Reach, South East London, was built by Moxon Architects. It features Surelight’s 3000K Orionis LED Strip Lights incorporated into the hand rails.

Moxon Architects were looking for lighting to incorporate into their new swing bridge design concept. Around 50m in length, the swing bridge was being built across Deptford Creek; allowing access to pedestrians and cyclists from Deptford to Greenwich. As such lighting was an important part of the design.

With a sculptural form, suggestive of origami, the lighting needed to be robust to withstand the outside elements, be bright enough to illuminate the bridge for pedestrians but be perfectly hidden and incorporated into the bridge to work well with Moxon’s design. Moxon Architects had previously used the Orionis on their Castle Bridge, Taunton project and during its build had another innovative idea on how to illuminate a bridge pathway using the same lights.

With the help of our in-house experts Moxon Architects were able to hide the Orionis LED strip lighting in the handrails of the bridge.

Surelight love when customers push the boundaries of lighting architecture. Our team in the past have tweeked and customised lighting specifically for one off projects. For this project in particular our team put together a concept sketch on how to hide all the wiring in the handrail to make Moxon’s lighting idea a reality.

The final design speaks for itself and the bridge has already received a very positive reception with locals and tourist alike; being shortlisted for a number of awards including the Structural Steel Awards 2015 and ICE Evening Standard Peoples Choice Award.
