When deciding on how best to light a limited interior or to illuminate an exterior space, LED Neon lighting is fast becoming the most popular way to make an impression. Neon lights are wonderfully versatile and can be adapted to suit any purpose. We have worked on many projects which have required us to think creatively about the use of neon lights. Here are a couple of our favourite projects where LED Neon and EL was placed at the fore.
Coldplay: Mylo Xyloto Tour
Surelight was approached by Coldplay to create a truly unique lighting show for the worldwide tour of their album Mylo Xyloto. The band initially asked Surelight to create four Electroluminescent (EL) wire flowers which would measure up to 2.5 metres in diameter. These flowers would be operated by a custom-built DMX controller and were programmed to sequence in time with the music. Since these flowers were made out EL wire, they were bright but did not overpower the stage-lighting.
Enthused by the flowers, Coldplay came back for more! This time the stage designers were interested in a product known as LED XL Neon Light Rope which would be used to outline the stage. The Neon Light Rope is so bright that concert-goers at the back of the stadium would appreciate its effect. The final flourish was to hand out strips of EL Wire for each concert goer to wear as a bracelet – the result was an unprecedented community light show which created a unique concert experiences.
Race Car Panels
How do you help the Le Mans racing series audience easily identify which car is which during the race’s 24-hour length? Surelight’s Electroluminescent (EL) panels are the answer! Le Mans 24 is a gruelling endurance race which lasts for an entire day, with drivers competing through the night.
Aston Martin approached Surelight and ordered a supply of EL panels to decorate their cars for the race. The panel would be used to display the car’s race number throughout the competition, as is now a race requirement for all cars. The neon panel would also allow supporters to keep track of the Aston Martin cars despite the lack of light. The panels really came into their own during the night of the race, with the Aston Martins lighting up the race track using the iconic 007 number for one of the vehicles.
Aston is one of many teams using Surelight’s panels, which have been developed, along with the inverter controller, to provide the ideal solution to vehicle numbering for night racing series. Surelight’s products are the product of choice for most teams.
