EL Strip (Split EL Panel)

EL Strip or Split EL Panel is manufactured using a roll to roll manufacturing process It is not screen printed like EL Parallel Panels. Whilst EL Parallel Panels are great for certain appliations (Animated Retail Displays for example) EL Strip/Split EL Panel has advantages in other areas; there is no electrical busbar running through the lamp. Electrical connectors can be anywhere on the lamp. Our EL Strip/Split EL Panel has Edge to edge illumination, with no busbar to hide around the outside. Each EL Strip/ Split EL Panel can be hundreds of meters long. Our EL Strip/Split EL Panel can be cut into any shape with something as basic as scissors.

Why is EL Strip Unique?

EL Strip is unique to other electroluminescent technologies because it is manufactured in long continuous rolls that are 760mm wide and over 365m long.

Most EL products are silk screen printed and are limited to a specific size, shape and connection location. The EL Strip manufacturing process allows unparalleled quality and size with the ability to be easily fabricated into different widths, lengths and shapes.

EL Strip master rolls are split into a variety of standard widths and lengths but can be modified or custom cut for specific needs.

Available Colours

Surelight EL Strip is manufactured in two basic colours:
Aqua EL Strip

Aqua EL Strip

Aqua utilises a mix of natural Blue & Green phosphor crystals which, combined, give the best brightness and life available.

White EL Strip

White EL Strip

White is made by adding a dye to the phosphor mix during manufacturing. When energised, the Blue/Green color is shifted by the dye to appear as a pure White color of 5400 degrees Kelvin.

The Scribe Line

A distinguishing characteristic of EL Strip is the line down the centre of whatever width the lamp is cut to. This line is made by cutting or scribing into the aluminium backing of the lamp, dividing it into two electrical conductors of equal size and symmetry. This technique is what allows the uniform illumination of such large areas of light, and also allows for the lamp to be custom shaped and molded.

El Panel Lamination

Surelight EL Strip is available in both an indoor and outdoor grade. Indoor grade lamp is laminated with a standard polyester material that resists humidity up to 70%. Outdoor grade lamp utilises a specially formulated laminate that provides up to 99% humidity protection plus ultraviolet (UV) protection to stand up to sun exposure. Prolonged contact with water will cause the lamp to begin to black out and not light in those spots.

Cutting EL Strip

EL Strip’s unique and patented construction method allows for custom fabrication techniques that are unparalleled by any other Electroluminescent technology.

EL Strip may be cut into many regular and irregular shapes. However, there are some specific guidelines that should be followed to avoid problems such as uneven luminance.

The following are some general guidelines that should be considered when cutting and shaping Surelight EL Strip. Please contact Surelight for specific shape or cutting related matters.

The shape and area should be symmetrical to the scribe line for uniform luminance:

The proportion of the lamp area to the scribe length should be close enough to allow adequate electrical conduction and to avoid scribe line heating, uneven luminance, and premature lamp failure:

The distance from the scribe line to any point that is both asymmetric and beyond the plane of the end of the line should be minimal to avoid uneven luminance:

Internal Voids

One of the truly unique features of EL Strip material is the ability to fabricate shapes with internal voids. There are no restrictions on the shapes of these holes; however, the guidelines discussed previously in this document should be followed.

When the holes are actually through the scribe line, ensure a continuous conductive area is maintained on either side of the scribe line to ensure that all of it lights correctly. Also, the total area of the void should be less than the overall panel area, and symmetry of area should be maintained

Folds

Surelight EL Strip can be folded, curved, or bent many times over. The lamp may be safely folded anywhere except exactly along the scribe line. Repeated bending and folding at the same point will damage the lamp.

Laminate Border

In determining the cut size of the lamp, be sure to consider the cut edges of the lamp. If previously laminated, the new cut edge will be uninsulated and prove an electric shock hazard.

It must be then insulated with scotch tape or any other insulated sealer. If the lamp is uninsulated when cutting, it will likely be laminated to insulate it. Most prefer a flange of 1/8” on any cut size of laminate to ensure insulation.
