Studio 557 Bar and Grill Sheffield - LED Lighting Success

Surelight have provided colour changing LED Lighting and our low energy MR16 LED light bulbs to Spacepad Studio.

The former Walnut Club Champagne Bar in Ecclesall Road, Sheffield has been under major refurbishment. Surelight's LED lighting added some finishing touches to this ultra-modern interior of the newly refurbished bar and grill, now called "Studio 557"

“It’s boutiquey: very sleek, very contemporary, very cool,” says designer Mark Platts, who is driving the scheme.

Other recent projects of his company, Spacepad, include a new housing development on Psalter Lane in and the Playspace activity centre at Ranmoor Sheffield.

Platts and his partners – promoter Carey Williams and construction specialist Andrew France – have installed a new first-floor reception, moved the kitchen upstairs and opened out the space to create a bar and open-plan multi-function venue which can be hired for parties, wedding receptions, corporate functions and conferences.

LED colour changing back-lit walls and counter fronts feature throughout the building, hidden LED lighting highlights the lush alcove seating with a soft tempting illuminance.

HC Gilje - LED Neon Light Rope Installation in Fantoft-paradis Tunnel for Bybanen in Bergen

LED Neon Light Rope - HC Gijle - The fantoft-paradis tunnel for bybanen in BergenLED Neon Light Rope - HC Gijle - The fantoft-paradis tunnel for bybanen in BergenNorwegian artist, designer and lighting specialist HC Gilje uses our LED Neon Light Rope to amazing effect in the installation "puls" in an LED Neon Light Rope installation inside the fantoft paradis tunnel in the newly opened metroline Bybanen in Bergen, Norway.

The installation consists of two long wave patterns of light, one side red, the other blue. The total length is about 400m. The two wave patterns overlap, so for about 100 m you will see both the red and blue pulse.

"I wanted to work with the fact that the train is moving at about 70km/h (about 20m/s) through the tunnel, using the movement of the train as a way of animating the two wave patterns mounted on the tunnel walls...There are a lot of factors influencing how the work is experienced.  If you sit by the window closest to the tunnel wall the wave breaks up into rapidly changing curves and lines. If you sit closer to the middle of the tunnel you will see longer stretches of the wave. You will also see reflections of the waves in the windows of the train."

Couture Clubbing uses Surelight Electroluminescent Wire

EL Wire Egg Dress by Couture ClubbingElectroluminescent Wire Red Skirt by Couture ClubbingCouture Clubbing’ is the innovative idea brought about by two Central Saint Martins graduates Amy Winters and Kseniya Zagorodnyuk. Professionally they were trained in costume/set/art direction and upon graduation they formed a fashion and entertainment label.

Their latest ‘Paradise Lost’ collection is based on the epic poem by John Milton. It describes the journey of The Fall of man from the perspective of Satan. Every single outfit represents a character or an episode from the poem. Innovative fabrics used in the collection react to sound, light and atmosphere.

Left: ‘The Chaos dress’ is based on the idea of chaos and transformation. The shape and the colour of the dress were inspired by Dali’s ‘Birth of the New Man’ painting, which depicted a man in a transformed egg. The form is outlined with Surelight Neon Glow Wire.

ART REVIEW says:

Mathias Gmachl at loop.ph uses our Surelight EL Wire for this amazing DMX controlled sculpture“One area that fascinates designers is electroluminescence and light projections. Young designers Rachel Wingfield and Sam Buxton experimented with eerily phosphorescent electroluminescence. Buxton used it to make a clock, Wingfield a duvet that gradually lights up at dawn to help the user wake up… , … Designer Soner Ozenc recently applied electroluminescent design to create his Sajjadah 1426 prayer mat, which glows brightly when pointed towards Mecca.”

Right: Visit our Video Gallery to see this Surelight EL Glow Wire Installation in action! The design uses over 1000m of our EL Glow Wire, and using DMX control looks absolutely stunning. It was designed and created by Mathias Gmachl at Loop.ph.

Nathaniel Rackowe - Exterior installation ‘Spin’

Nathaniel Rackowe - Exterior installation ‘Spin’ Displaying new works created from light and sound, Nathaniel Rackowe exhibited his exterior installation ‘Spin’ in a selected area of the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail.

Using light, kinetic elements, and common industrial materials, Rackowe makes large-scale works that animate architectural spaces and transform viewers into active participants. Often built on-site, his pieces explore the boundaries of physical spaces, moving through them or casting light about their perimeters like search beacons.

Axis ‘Process & Practice’ review:

Nathaniel seemingly decided to ignore this romantic woodland of dreams and mythology and instead deliberately imposed his masculine urban vision onto this restless place. Order from chaos. Whilst one of his works used light to expose the underbelly of environment – scanning the surrounds and drawing straight lines to bisect it visually, the other had a truly alien presence. Glowing wires constructed a 3D illusion of a digitally rendered wireframe drawing. Suspended high up in the trees, the rectangular form appeared to move in and around them, constricting and containing them, ignoring their structural dominance, cutting through their power. Suggestions of urban neon, of advertising, of technology, juxtaposed against the rural defying it. - Carolyn Black, May 2006

Craig DuAlba

Craig DuAlba used our Surelight EL Wire to make these architectural ringsCraig DuAlba used our Surelight wire to create these fantastic glowing rings in the floor.

“I needed lighting that would be bright enough yet small enough to go around the glass rings, and the Surelight EL Glow Wire was perfect. I wrapped three layers of wire (top to bottom) around the outside and inside of the glass rings. It was then all hooked up to an X10 switch and with one turn of the switch all three rings glow brightly. I live in Irvine, California and the glowing rings are one of the most unique aspects of my house”

The Sajjadah 1426 EL Panel prayer mat by Soner Ozenc

EL Panel Saijadah Prayer Mat by Soner Ozenc
EL Panel Saijadah Prayer Mat by Soner Ozenc
EL Panel Saijadah Prayer Mat by Soner Ozenc

Muslims pray five times a day. The only product they need to perform their prayers is a prayer rug or prayer mat. There is one thing they need to be careful about: the holy city of Mecca – the direction towards which they should perform their prayers.

‘Sajjadah 1426′ is designed to solve this problem in a subtle way while enriching the praying experience with the illuminated patterns on its surface. The word ’sajjadah’ is a Persian/Turkish word meaning ‘prayer rug’ and the number ‘1426′ stands for ‘2005′ in Islamic calendar.

It indicates the direction via the data coming from a compass module embedded inside the prayer rug. The closer to the direction of Mecca it is turned, the brighter the EL Panel pattern illuminates.

The Time Curtain - EL Panel Installation

The Time Curtain - EL Panel Clock Curtain by Soner Ozenc

The Time Curtain, like the EL Butterfly Night Light, also uses EL panels in its design. Sureligiht supplies EL Panels, as well as EL Glow WIre.

The product is a brand new approach to how we display and understand ‘time’. ‘Time’ has always been a barrier on our way but now with the Time Curtain, you will literally be passing through ‘time’ leaving behind the past- a total relief. Time Curtain represents our freedom against time and all the things we always wanted to leave behind. Open your Time Curtain to a bright future!

Soner Ozenc is specialised in this technology and open to commission works.

Benson Saw and Voon Wong

Benson Saw and Voon Wong create this amazing EL wire Chiase Lounge with our EL Glow WireBenson Saw and Voon Wong are part of a group of talented designers whose concepts and designs are increasingly being used to exhibit new products and materials into the public domain. Saw has designed and created a range of dramatic illuminating furniture, using our Surelight Glow Wire as the base material. As seen at the Designers Block in Milan, Italy, these products have been recently nominated for the Peugeot-OXO Design Awards.

Exhibitions in London, Milan and Cologne have provided the initial platform for Saw’s wonderful creations.

Benson says: “I came across Surelight Electroluminescent (EL) Wire as an alternative to traditional light sources. I wanted to apply this technology in a new way. This technology was combined with the traditional craft of weaving. The chaise-longue (seen left) was one of several objects used to demonstrate the application and scale of the woven EL wire”

Mark Dowson

Mark Dowson EL Wire DesignStudying for his BSc in Product Design, Mark utilised our Surelight Neon Glow Wire in a lighting project for his Design for Manufacture module at Brunel University. As shown left, the actual product was a hollow cube which was, as Mark describes, “…inspired by unique jellyfish characteristics. The transparency of a jellyfish is represented by the aesthetical qualities of the light. The edges of the cube have form. The rest of the light is hollow to create the effect of complete transparency.” The glow wire was threaded in a cubic acrylic rod frame, and the inverter stored in a triangular section in one corner.

Mark is currently in London, designing gifts and toys for Marks and Spencers during his work placement year.

Rebecca Skeels

Rebecca Skeels EL Wire hanging panelsSurelight and Rebecca have designed and produced six large hangings for a restaurant in Bracknell, Berkshire. The design was inspired by Austrian painter and illustrator Gustav Klimt’s style, combined with the elegant and contemporary feel of a high class restaurant. From this two other very similar projects were commissioned; one for a sound studio and another for an event at Jongleurs Comedy Club in Reading.

As well as designing and making one off pieces of work for individuals, companies and galleries, Rebecca also teaches, demonstrates and lectures on jewellery, precious metal clay and creative thinking techniques.

Rebecca’s thoughts on Surelight EL Wire:

“I think this is a great material to inspire not just designer makers, but also product, performance, architectural, interior, and packaging designers. From students to professionals.

Surelight EL Wire, like many new and exciting products, is still waiting for the exceptional breakthrough of innovative design and for someone to use it in a unique, elegant and captivating way. There are some great designs on the Surelight website already, but I feel it can go yet one more step further. Lets hope I get there first…. if I have time.”
